Initial Impressions:
Good looking wrapper. Supposed to be a 50 ring gauge, but felt a little smaller to me.
First Third Notes:
Nice initial flavor of aged tobacco and cedar. Then a definite cinnamon or other baking spices, especially on retrohale.
Second Third Notes:
Surprisingly complex. Tasting notes of nuts, cedar and baking spices seemed to come in layers. Draw tighter than I like, but not to the point of annoyance. I did find myself having to puff more frequently than normal to keep it going
Finishing Notes:
Other than the tight draw, I could find nothing to gripe about. Consistent flavors throughout.
Review:
I think this Mulligan Yacht Club is a story of redemption between me and Rocky Patel. I had tried several of their premium blends in my earlier years of cigar smoking, going back to a time when I'd smoke only in summer and pretty much only on weekends. A time when a sampler pack almost certainly lasted me more than a whole year. Rocky, I wasn't a fan. I'd fallen in love with Nicaraguan blends by then and would occasionally go for my inaugural smoke, the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur (#3). But I kept hearing about RP so much back then that I tried a few varieties but was so unimpressed that I had written the brand off as "all talk, no action" for probably 15 years.
Fast forward to today and Holt's sent me a Yacht Club stick in my August COTM pack. I had been a bit interested in the Mulligans series, but really didn't feel like buying a box or a sampler of a brand I'd long remembered as not my thing. But this stick has made me reevaluate my thinking. I was absolutely blown away. It stood shoulder to shoulder with some of my favorite blends, and seriously might have beaten a few. To do that at a very economical price point had me a bit perplexed. This stick was so enjoyable that if it had a bit of an easier draw, I think it would be reasonable at 2-3x the bundle price. I will be buying a bundle of the torpedoes with my next order. At around $75 for 20, I don't see how I can go wrong. This will be a fantastic cigar to share without wanting to cry if someone tossed it after a few puffs. I'd they did, well, that's their loss.
