Initial Impressions:
Cigar is slightly misshapen, as can be seen in the image somewhat. I received 4 of these in a sampler and noticed that the wrapper color varies slightly between them. Very mild smell and cold-draw. Draw very tight. Had to V-cut through my straight-cut.
First Third Notes:
Pleasant aroma, mild. Had to use draw poker. Still like trying to suck down a thick milkshake through a coffee stirrer. Hard to keep burning.
Second Third Notes:
About the same. Gave up because the draw was so tight.
Finishing Notes:
Did not finish.
Review:
I know this is an old and possibly iconic brand, but this is the first one I've ever had. I got this in the Connecticut Cream monster deal sampler from Holt's. Coming in at an abysmal 63 rating from me, based largely on its impossibly tight draw, construction and miserable smoking experience.
If value for the dollar were part of my rating, the current box price of $276 for 20 sticks would probably bring it down to a score of about a 53. There are many, many other brands I'd recommend ahead of this one. As is, I find the Montecristo to be a total rip-off. Your grandfather can keep his Montecristos and I'll gladly smoke an Argyle Banquet for about $10 less. In fact, the two cigars should trade prices.
The one thing I'll give it is that it has quite a nice aroma. It's a shame I have to work so hard to smoke it that I really can't detect any flavor notes to speak of other than earthiness. I'll probably give the remaining three sticks away, as long as the recipients are strangers.
