Initial Impressions:
Beautiful band. Wrapper had three worm holes and the cut was not 90-degrees - it was off by a degree or two. Forgot to smell/cold draw. Canoed just after lighting and had to keep touching up.
First Third Notes:
Cinnamon and maybe some other baking spices. Canoeing is a real problem. Noticed a slight bulge and sort of an elongated void in the ash in that area. Burn is terrible, touchup needed to the end of first third, Draw a bit tight.
Second Third Notes:
Smoke aroma is very pleasant. More baking spices and some mild pepper. Still chasing that canoe. Around the halfway point the draw tightened up like a snare drum. Unfortunate.
Finishing Notes:
Draw loosened up a bit by the start of the final third - still too tight, but now it's burning really hot.
Review:
Well, I think maybe the Garcia's were trying out a new torcedor/torcedora the day this stick was made, or they were having a bad day. The construction was abysmal and ruined any enjoyment to be had. This experience also has me wondering... I received this cigar in a sampler from Holts that included 4 or 5 sticks of each selection. Could they be getting factory seconds/rejects to fill out their samplers? I don't think so, but you never know. There was a time I used to smoke bundles of Famous Smoke Nicaraguan cigars that ran somewhere around $3.25 a stick. They don't compare to this cigar in any way other than the country of origin, but I mention it because at that price-point you might expect construction issues. I never had that with those Famous smokes by the way. This was utterly disappointing for such a great brand of cigars. Had this been my first experience with San Cristobal, it might have caused me to write off the brand altogether. I still have 3 or 4 of these so I will try again at some point and update this review. I know these cigars are better than this. Aside from all the issues, there wasn't a lot going on with this stick flavor and complexity-wise. It was pretty good, definitely mild. I'm looking for a good morning cigar with a Connecticut wrapper and mild-medium strength and I will say that I recently tried an Argyle Banquet Selection that simply knocked the socks off this Elegancia. In fact, that cigar came out of the same sampler come to think of it.
